Step into the joys of Portuguese summer with a list of the top must go places of Algarve!

1) Benagil

The Algar de Benagil, or Benagil Cave, is without a doubt one of the most impressive and famous natural landmarks in Portugal. It features a remarkable grotto with a hole in the ceiling known as "the eye," which illuminates the golden sands and turquoise waters with sunlight and provides glimpses of the blue sky above.

Pro tip: If you plan to travel to the Algarve, be sure to include a trip to this beautiful cave in your itinerary. Benagil Cave is one of the most popular places to visit, and as with any tourist destination it can get very crowded, so it's important to research your options before you travel so you can enjoy your visit as much as possible.

2) Ilha da Fuzeta

Separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Ria Formosa estuary and part of the area protected by Natural Park status, the Ilha da Fuzeta islands is located in front of the similarly named settlement with access gained only by boat from either Fuzeta or Olhão.

The sand runs westwards over several kilometres and the generally calm seawater is excellent for children who can go ahead and play safely.

Adventure tip: For those wishing to complement their days of leisure with a little activity, the Beach is perfect for long walks over the sands with equipment hire available for those wishing to go canoeing, sailing or windsurfing.

3) Cacelha Velha

Cacela Velha is a coastal town located between Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António.

The area was occupied by numerous civilizations over the centuries, including the Phoenicians, the Romans, and the Arabs. Perched on a hill, overlooking the sea and Ria Formosa Natural Park, Cacela Velha is one of the Algarve's hidden gems and is rarely overrun by tourists. Food Tip: Try some local restaurants where you will find a variety of fresh seafood such as clams, shrimp, squid and oysters.

4) Praia do Carvoeiro

Carvoeiro is an Algarve fishing village turned tourist hot spot located five kilometers south of Lagoa.

Backed by hills, Carvoeiro centres around a picturesque cove with a sandy and sheltered beach, although it does get very busy in high season.

Insider Tip: Better and quieter beaches can be found close by at Praia do Centeanes and Benagil.

5) Sagres

Sagres is a charming town that has one of the most dazzling landscapes of the Algarve. Temp ingremes crags, an interesting fortress whipped by the wind and excellent beaches.

Fun Fact: It should be noted that the small city of Sagres is full of activities during the Surf Festival, held over a weekend in mid-August and featuring musical performances in the presence of many lovers and fans of surfing.

6) Faro, the Ludo walk

Beautiful routes on foot or by bicycle along the coast or inland, with different difficulties and for all ages. One of our favorite walks is the Ludo walk, which connects with the São Lourenço itinerary, through a narrow path that seems to float on the Ria Formosa until it reaches the Quinta do Lago beach.
